2024 HMS Academic Team

(Harlan, Ky.) – The Harlan Middle School Academic Team recently captured their fifth consecutive Kentucky Governor’s Cup District Championship. Following up on last year’s district and region championships, the Harlan Middle School Academic Team took top honors in District 67 Kentucky Governor’s Cup competition recently held at Green Hills. Schools competing in District 67 were Green Hills, JACES, Harlan, Rosspoint, and Wallins. The Harlan Quick Recall team went undefeated knocking off Rosspoint in Round one and Wallins in rounds three and five. Wallins finished in 2nd place in Quick Recall with Wallins finishing third. Future Problem Solving was won by Wallins followed by Harland in 2nd place and JACES secured 3rd place.

Green Dragons secured first-place finishes in five of the six assessment areas. Students compete in Math, Science, Social Studies, Language Arts, Arts and Humanities, and Composition.

Harlan scored a total of 51 points on their way to their fifth consecutive district championship.  Wallins was runner-up with 27 points and Rosspoint secured 3rd place with 21

The 2024 district title marks the Green Dragons' fifth consecutive title and 18th in the last 22 years. Harlan is coached by Mr. Chris Day and Mr. Chris Howard. The top five finishers in each subject area assessment will advance to the regional competition.

Voted on by the participating schools, Harlan Middle School was also awarded the Hume Sportsmanship Award.

Top finishers and teams will advance to regional competition in February. Students will be competing for a chance to advance at the State event held in Louisville, Kentucky.
