Harlan is launching a new mobile app that helps students, parents, and community members know what is happening on campus, right from their phones. We know that families are using smartphones as a primary means to communicate. That’s why we’ve created an app that is custom-built for mobile. On the app, you can find documents, contact information for staff, and event information. You can download the app for free from the Apple App Store or Google Play.

Great things are in store for the students of the Harlan Independent School District this year. The faculty, staff, & administration have been looking forward to this day for a long time with one thing in mind - the success of your student. Following up on a strong finish to the 2020-2021 school year, we look forward to working with our school community to ensure that student success is our highest priority in the year ahead. We are encouraged by the tremendous outpouring of support by our school community as we embark on the new school year and remain committed to meeting the needs of students regardless of the circumstances they face. As a reminder, the 2021-2022 School Year will begin for students on Wednesday, August 18th, 2021. Harlan High School would like to wish our Green Dragon Golf team good luck as they compete in their first match of the 2021 season. They will be competing at Wasioto Winds beginning at 4:30 pm this afternoon. Harlan Middle School Girls Basketball Team wins 2 games to start season ! The HMS 5th and 6th grade basketball team defeated Williamsburg 30-11. The HMS 7th and 8th grade basketball team also won against the Jackets 35-33.

It’s a family reunion for our Green Dragons at Harlan Independent!! Kindergarten and 5th Grade students participated in JUMPSTART today to help ensure a strong start for the 2021-2022 school year. Kindergarten will continue each day through August 5th. #FamilyofDragons

As a result of material shortages across the country, some delays have been experienced in key areas, like the renovated kitchen, which will require a delayed start for the 2021-2022 school year. Students in Kindergarten through High School were originally scheduled to start on Thursday, August 12, 2021, but will now begin on Wednesday, August, 18th, 2021.

Incoming Harlan High School freshmen will have Freshman Orientation tonight at 6 pm in the Humanities Building. Freshmen will be receiving information about the school year, getting class schedules, and meeting teachers.

Each year the Kentucky High School Athletics Association recognizes student-athletes who participate in sports on the varsity level during each season of the academic year (fall/winter/spring). Harlan Independent Schools would like to recognize the following Green Dragons for their dedication: John Mark Bryson, Emma Owens, Tess Bryson, Cameren Maples, Mia Claire Pace, Kyler McLendon, Darius Akal, and Annie Hoskins. FRYSC, Save The Children & 21st Century will host a 'boo hoo" breakfast for parents on August 2nd. Students will get to meet their teachers and spend 4 partial days getting families with their school! Parents will have the opportunity to speak with the school nurse, complete forms, and learn about all of the wonderful educational opportunities Harlan Elementary has to offer! Come join us! Last week 16 students from Harlan Independent participated in the Washington Institute for Leading and Learning (WILL), sponsored by Kentucky Educational Development Corporation (KEDC) and the National Council for History Education (NCHE). Led by Harlan High School Social Studies teacher, Megan Freyer, students particpated in Zoom meetings with institutions and individuals from Washington D.C. pertaining to our nation's history: virtual tours of Mt. Vernon and Monticello, introductions to Ford's Theater and the National Archives and discussions with Kentucky Lt. Governor Jacqueline Coleman and author/historian Erica Armstrong Dunbar. The purpose of the program was to provide an opportunity to enhance student knowledge of our nation’s past so that they have the background to emerge as young leaders in our democracy. #familyofdragons #youngleaders
